MATA welcomes Sweden’s Curious Chamber Players for a night that moves from the primeval depths skyward. Bolivian composer Carlos Guittiérez Quiroga’s Jintilli posits the beginnings of the world with natural sounds born of natural materials. Tomi Räisänen’s Stheno imagines the Gorgon’s mourning, what Pindar says was the basis for all music. Wang Lu and Malin Bång’s music deals with the detritus of the urban – Berlin’s constant remaking in the case of Bång’s palinode and the daily life of Xi’an, Wang’s hometown, in her MATA-commissioned work Urban Inventory. Johann Svensson’s diamond dust gives life to the tiny ice crystals that together form the clouds. The evening ends with a new work from MATA’s own Todd Tarantino.

Always curious, CCP has since its inception in 2003 explored a wide range of new music repertoire: from hard-core modernism to graphically notated chance music, from minimalism to noise music, and from electronics to improvisation. The ensemble has experimented with framing concerts and sound installations with a unique use of time and space, each different according to the venue and situation.

Experimentation is at the core of CCP’s work and past projects have included bringing other art forms such as video improvisation, theatre, Tarot meditation, dance, poetry, and fragrance. Other than conventional instrumentation (flute, clarinet, percussion, piano, violin, and cello), CCP extends its sound world through integrating everyday objects into their projects such as balloons, kitchen tools, and the infamous “beckoning cat”.

CCP has performed in contemporary music festivals such as Gaudeamus Muziekweek, IMPULS, New Directions Viitasaari, Darmstädter Ferienskurs, Estonian Music Days, Extension Paris, and SPOR to critical acclaim, bringing their own flavour of spontaneity and identity to every project they undertake.

With Malin Bång as the resident composer and co-artistic director, CCP specializes in collaborating with composers of the younger generation throughout Scandinavia and the rest of the world.

Malin Bång’s music is an exploration of movement and energy. She defines her musical material according to their amount of friction to create a spectrum of unpredictable and contrasting actions, ranging from the intimate and barely audible to the harsh and obstinate. In her work she often incorporates acoustic objects to explore a rich sound world and to suggest that a musical content can be shaped by anything valuable to the artistic purpose.

Malin Bång (born in 1974) is residing in Stockholm, Sweden and is the composer in residence and a founding member of the Curious Chamber Players. Her works are performed worldwide and some recent projects include the portrait concert “how long is now” at Ultraschall Festival 2014 with performances by the CCP, collaborations with Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Recherche, Nadar, Ensemble Nikel at festivals such as a Wittener Tage für Neue Musik, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Darmstädter Ferienkurse, Huddersfield Festival, Impuls in Graz and Gaudeamus in Utrecht.  In 2012 did a one year residency in Berlin, invited as a guest by the DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogramm. She was awarded the Kranichsteiner Stipendienpreis for her ensemble work Turbid Motion at the Darmstadt Festival in 2010.
