------

MATA Festival [www.matafestival.org], the Brooklyn-based young composer advocacy and presenting organization, is accepting proposals for its 2008-09 Curatorial Associate (CA) program. In collaboration with MATA's Directors, activities include developing content and coordinating logistics for one concert of the organization's new bi-monthly performance series Interval (details below).

The focus of Interval is the presentation of innovative work by young and emerging composers and performers. During the 2007-08 season, Interval programming included works for live-electronics, video, and improvisers as well as more traditional chamber music formats such as string quartet and song cycles. CA's are welcome to curate and perform their own work.

The CA Program is intended to give its participants valuable real-world experience with the basic elements of concert conception and production, and to encourage critical discourse via current online formats, live discussions, etc. Over the course of 10 weeks, which includes 2 in-person meetings at the MATA office in Brooklyn, CA's will be required to:

Formally propose content ideas and a comprehensive budget for an Interval event (both performative and critical).
Coordinate schedules and other logistics with the participating composers, performing artists, and venue. All concerts will take place at Issue Project Room (www.issueprojectroom.org), a 75+ seat modular performance space with both a simple stereo PA, discreet multi-channel sound system, and an upright piano.
Assist the coordination of public relations activities, including writing press release copy, executing email blasts, audio and video documentation, collecting placements post-concert, etc. Technical assistance will be provided if necessary, and MATA's Directors will be available throughout the process.
Execute various critical/contextualizing activities related to the programming, i.e. hypertext essays, podcasts, blog posts, and panel discussions. Other innovative ideas welcome.
Maintain and develop the Interval blog (matafestival.org/interval)

Each Curatorial Associate will receive a stipend of $500. Neither travel nor housing funds are available. In addition to providing funds for technical staff and equipment rental, MATA has budgeted $1000-1500 to compensate performers. PLEASE NOTE: these funds are for performance fees only and can not be used to commission new works.

Proposal emails should include the following attachments (PDF preferred):
1) Applicant's Resumé/CV
2) Proposal Outline
• A paragraph describing the curatorial concept and/or theme
• A list of potential artists, including a short bio and URL's to web resources
• A paragraph describing contextualizing ideas related to proposed concept (i.e. blog, podcast, video, etc.)

ABOUT MATA INTERVAL
Began during the 2007-08 season, MATA Interval is a bi-monthly series produced in conjunction with Issue Project Room (IPR). Interval features emerging composers and performers in programs developed and produced by young participants in MATA's Curatorial Associate program. Presented at IPR in Gowanus, Brooklyn, the series is committed to presenting various streams of thought and aesthetics from the field, mapping areas in which the traditional and the experimental coexist.

CURATORIAL ASSOCIATE PROGRAM
The MATA Curatorial Associate (CA) program is intended to offer young participants in the field of contemporary music and related fields the opportunity to curate and produce a concert at Issue Project Room (IPR) in Brooklyn. Always in collaboration with MATA's Directors, the primary activities of this paid curatorial internship is to develop content and coordinate logistics for a single 10-week cycle of MATA's bi-monthly performance series MATA Interval. CA's will engage in critical activities related to their programming, including live presentations at IPR and/or online mechanisms such as hypertext essays, podcasts, and interactive web logs. In the process, CA's will gain experience contextualizing the work of their peers while expanding their understanding and use of the various tools and formats available today.
